Kidney-Friendly Tips For Diabetic Patients

Kidneys are two bean-shaped organs—each is just the size of a fist—but they’re hard-working. Kidneys filter the blood circulating in our body, removing excess fluids, wastes and toxins. Kidney failure is a serious concern: If the kidneys fail, survival depends on either a kidney transplant surgery or dialysis (being plugged with a machine that does the kidneys’ blood-filtering).

Diabetes, especially type2 diabetes, has become so common that Nephropathy (diabetic kidney disease) has surged ahead of high blood pressure as the main cause of kidney failure. High blood glucose levels can harm blood vessels in the body, including the small blood vessels that are responsible for kidneys’ filtering. Though 30-40 percent diabetic patients develop kidney disease, it can be slowed considerably if diagnosed early and treated.

Prescription for Kidney Health

The diabetic patients must follow the following principles to prevent and treat kidney problems:

  • Quit cigarette smoking
  • Strict control of blood glucose levels (A1C less than 7 percent)
  • Strict control of blood pressure: strive for less than 130/80
  • Control of lipids: HDL cholesterol should be more than 50 mg/dl, LDL cholesterol should be below 100 mg/dl, and triglycerides should be under 150 mg/dl
  • Drugs meant for lowering the blood pressure, such as angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) or ACE inhibitors, effectually protect the kidney from damage in case of diabetic kidney disease.

Whilst following these tips to keep your kidneys healthy, you should also be familiar with various symptoms that can signify a kidney problem. These symptoms may include:

  • Feeling lethargic
  • Dry and Darkened skin
  • Increased or decreased urination
  • Headaches and Vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Low appetite
  • Insomnia
  • Muscle cramps

If you observe any of these symptoms, you must immediately consult a doctor. “With aggressive treatment and frequent testing, you can keep your kidneys healthy and reduce the probability of developing kidney failure,” says Dr. Kammela Sreedhar.
