The growth of Assisted Reproduction: Addressing infertility since 70’s

Louise Brown, the first test-tube baby, has lived more than 41 summers on the planet. She has probably been the most prominent symbol of IVF’s success. Millions of children, after her, have been born with the help of IVF method across the globe.

Embryology, the science that deals with the study of gametes’ prenatal development, fertilization of eggs, and embryos development, has grown into a more refined subject of research with time as embryologists have continued to explore the vast scope of knowledge in the field of human evolution. Over the years, they have mastered this science of In Vitro Fertilization and Assisted Reproduction concurrently with new technological advancements and scientific expansions.

The success of IVF in 1978

IVF has given the world a new direction towards achieving newer heights in the domain of human reproduction. In the year 1978, Louise was born, answering a lot of questions regarding the science behind fertility that has enabled millions of childless couples to conceive a baby. Sir Robert G Edwards, Patrick Steptoe, and Jean Purdy are credited with this success. A number of embryologists feel that the story of 25 July 1978 is not just about the first child born In Vitro but probably the most crucial event that has occurred in the late 20th century.

Expansion in Asia

The second IVF-conceived baby took birth in India just 67 days after Louise’s birth. This was again a remarkable news, since it happened in a region that usually embraces technological rise a little late. India currently has developed as a big market for IVF and is a huge contributor to the IVF service market in Asia-Pacific which will generate approx. $14 billion till 2030.

Reproductive health and IVF

With the expansion of IVF and other assisted reproductive techniques, it became very important to deal with the reproductive health issues that occur during the process. Also, some complications continue to be spotted by doctors and organizations around the world over the years. Many of these concerns have been addressed, thanks to the commendable efforts by various leading global fertility centers, among which Center of Assisted Reproduction in the USA, Instituto Bernabeu in Spain, Goral Gandhi IVF Clinic in India, etc., are prominent.

As for the rather nascent market of India, Goral Gandhi has been particularly instrumental in developing IVF centers and assisted reproduction labs across the country.

Further refinements

IVF continues to develop into more refined form with passing years. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), the procedure of injecting single sperm cell directly into the egg cytoplasm, was again a notable milestone in the journey of IVF. Gianpiero Palermo and his team generated the first human pregnancy through ICSI in the year 1991. Thanks to the contributions of various embryologists and experts, the zone of IVF is getting bigger and safer. In fact, IVF has been the answer to many questions related to most fertility problems.

Certainly, the evolution of IVF technique is an extremely impressive tale of how humans have been curious about addressing the issue of infertility.
