Diabetes: Symptoms, types, risk factors and treatment options

Diabetes is one of the most common medical conditions, which also happens to be a leading cause of severe issues like blindness, kidney failure, amputations, heart failure, and stroke. It is mainly caused due to the body’s inability to process blood glucose (also known as blood sugar).

Medical experts state that Diabetes is also likely to increase the risk of various bone and joint disorders. It is a long-term condition which results in high blood sugar levels. There are a number of bone problems associated with diabetes, directly related to blood sugar control and duration of the disease.

Listed below are some of the most common bone problems associated with diabetes:

  • Charcot’s joint (also known as Charcot’s foot or Charcot’s arthropathy)
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Diabetic hand syndrome (also known as cheiroarthropathy)

Other medical conditions related to diabetes include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Nerve damage and neuropathy (nerve pain)
  • Kidney disease
  • Retinopathy (nerve damage in the eye and/or blindness)

Types of Diabetes

Type I diabetes:

Commonly known as juvenile diabetes, it is mainly caused due to the body’s inability to produce insulin.

Type 2 diabetes:

This type of diabetes affects the way the body uses insulin.

Gestational diabetes:

It is quite common in pregnant women when their body’s sensitivity to insulin decreases.

Symptoms of Diabetes

  • Change in appetite
  • Urge for frequent urination (due to urinary tract infections or kidney problems)
  • Frequent weight loss or gain
  • Fatigue
  • Changed behavior
  • Problems related to eyesight and vision
  • Slow-healing wounds
  • Nausea
  • Skin infections
  • Darkening of skin in areas of body creases (acanthosis nigricans)
  • Fruity, sweet, or an acetone breath odor
  • A sensation of tingling or numbness in the hands or feet

A few signs and symptoms of diabetes are unique to men. Erectile dysfunction (ED, impotence), retrograde ejaculation, Low testosterone (low-T), decreased sex drive (decreased libido) and sexual dysfunction, are among the most common ones.

Treatment of Diabetes

Medications such as Insulin, which can be delivered through different procedures such as Insulin pump, Needle and syringe, Inhaler, Jet injector, and Injection port.

Medical treatments like Bariatric surgery, artificial pancreas and pancreatic islet transplantation.

It becomes important to note that the type of treatment and medication for diabetes depends upon the symptoms and type of the disease (Type I diabetes, Type 2 diabetes or Gestational diabetes)
