A quick guide to understanding the difference between liver and kidney

Even a sixth grader can recount the difference between the liver and kidney. However, not everyone is equipped with a deeper understanding of what exactly it is that differentiates the two organs. Given that they are two of the most important organs in the human body, it is crucial that we understand their differences and functions.

Simply put, the main difference between liver and kidney lies in their function. While the liver is involved in the of proteins, glycogen, triglycerides, cholesterol and bile, the kidney concerns itself with the removal of waste products and excess fluid from the body.

Additionally, the liver synthesizes food, cleanses the blood and stores energy. On the other hand, the kidney is responsible for the regulation of salt, potassium, acid content of the body and produces hormones too.

It is not just their functions that differentiate these two vital organs. Their location, physiology, the various systems they are a part of, etc., also define them. Let us, then, table the main differences between the liver and kidney.

Difference between liver and kidney

Liver Kidney
A lobed, glandular organ involved in the metabolism process of the human body A pair of bean-shaped organs involved in the excretion of body wastes
Located below the diaphragm, in the upper right portion of the abdominal cavity Located below the rib cage, on either side of the spine
Part of the digestive system Part of the urinary system
Involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids Involved in the excretion of wastes and osmolality regulation
Produces bile and clotting factors Secretes hormones, regularizes blood pressure and maintains body pH levels
Excretes metabolic wastes in the form of bile pigments Excretes ammonia, urea, uric acid and water
Stores glycogen, vitamins, fats and ions Does not store any substances

Despite their differences, the liver and kidney are some the most vital organs in the human body. They are critical to the proper functioning of the body and any irregularities in their behavior translates to various illnesses and diseases, which are fatal at times.

Proper care must be taken to ensure their healthy performance. Given that they are self-cleansing organs, they do an excellent job of maintaining themselves as long as one maintains a healthy diet. Ingestion of toxic substances like alcohol can have a negative impact on their function and overall health.

A famous saying goes, ‘You are what you eat’, and this is especially true when it comes to the liver and kidneys.
