Dr Alex D’souza explains the symptoms and causes of tonsils and adenoids

Lumps of soft tissue, tonsils and adenoids are you body’s first line of defense as part of the immune system. They bothare composed of tissues similar to the lymph nodes or glands, mainly found in the neck, groin, and armpits.  Dr Alex D’souza explains that both tonsils and adenoids function as a defense mechanism, preventing your body from infection.

As a matter of fact, tonsils and adenoids can occur at occur at any age. However, they are common in childhood and are mostly diagnosed among children from preschool age to adolescence.

Listed below are some of the most common symptoms and causes of tonsils and adenoids, which include:

  • Sore throat
  • Difficulty in swallowing food
  • Pain while swallowing food
  • Rough voice
  • Bad breath
  • Redness of the tonsils
  • Loss of appetite
  • Painful blisters or ulcers on the throat
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Earaches
  • Pain in stomach
  • Headaches
  • Stiffness in neck
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • jaw and neck tenderness
  • Recurrent ear infections
  • Breathing noisily
  • tonsils that appear red and swollen
  • tonsils that have white or yellow spots

Located at back of your throat, two masses of tissue called tonsils severe the purpose of filters for the body. They help in trapping germs and don’t let them enter your airways and cause infection. They also produce antibodies for combating infection. However, in some cases, the tonsils themselves become infected. According to Dr Alex D’souza,this majorly results in swelling and inflammation, a condition known as tonsillitis.

Tonsillitis is mainly caused due to bacterial and viral infections. Streptococcus, a genus of coccus Gram-positive bacteria is one of its most common causes.  Other common causes include:

  • Adenoviruses
  • Influenza virus
  • Epstein-Barr virus
  • Parainfluenza viruses
  • Enteroviruses
  • Herpes simplex virus

It is highly recommended to visit a doctor if you experience the common symptoms of infected or enlarged tonsils or adenoids.
