139% rise in online consultations about sexual health in India

As per the recent survey conducted by Practo, an online health consulting platform reported 139% growth for online sexual consultation in India breaking all the myths stating lack of awareness about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like HIV and AIDS. Telangana’s capital Hyderabad has witnessed huge jump in such online consultation.

The surprising data released showcases that Indians have asked one thousand queries per hour relating to sexual and reproductive health. Bengaluru marked the first position followed by Delhi and Mumbai.

As compared to last year Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad witnessed a significant boost at a rate of fifty percent in number of online sexologist consultation. People falling between age group of 21 to 30 years contributed seventy two percent of total e-consults on sexual health.

Masturbation, unplanned pregnancy, premature ejaculation and abortion are the key issues that seek the doctor consultation. Sexual health is one of the major concern for people belonging to non-metro cities contributing to 30% of all e-consults.

On September 4, World Sexual Health Day is celebrated for social awareness on sexual health across the globe after the recommendation of World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) in 2010.

It is also believed that sexual awareness promotes good family relationships, lowers the divorce rates, infections, infertility and make our young citizens aware and conscious about their sexual health.

Sexual awareness requires concentrated efforts not only from institutions and organizations, but also from individuals as members of the society.

The current program of sexual education in the Indian curriculum is termed adolescent FLE and was proposed by National AIDS Control Organization and the Ministry of Human Resources and Development. The major objectives of family life/sex education (FLE) is to develop emotionally and physically stable children and adolescents who feel sufficiently secure to decide their conduct without being carried away by their emotions.
