Most common symptoms of Thyroid you need to know

Thyroid happens to be one of the most common medical conditions, affecting the functioning of thyroid gland. Producing hormones essential for the metabolic processes and brain activity, the thyroid gland plays a major role in our body. However, an abnormal production of thyroid hormones leads to severe ailments.  Too much thyroid hormone causes hyperthyroidism. On the other hand, insufficient production of the hormone leads to hypothyroidism. As a matter of fact, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism account for 90% of all thyroid imbalances. Disorders related to the functioning of thyroid gland can either speed up or slow down metabolic processes and lead to a number of long-term health issues.  

According to a survey, more than 25 million people in America have a thyroid problem, with majority of them not aware of their health issues. This problem is much more common in women (especially right after pregnancy and menopause) as compared to men. Just like the types of thyroid conditions vary, the symptoms of thyroid vary too. It becomes difficult to diagnose this problem at times. However, it can be managed well if treated timely.

Some of the most common symptoms of thyroid include:

  • Weight Loss/Weight Gain: As a matter of fact, an unusual change in weight is a clear sign of abnormal functioning of the thyroid gland. An inadequate level of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism) can lead to increase in weight. On the other hand, an unexpected weight loss can indicate that too much thyroid hormone is being produced (hyperthyroidism). It has been observed that hypothyroidism is much more common than hyperthyroidism.
  • Swelling in the neck: A swollen neck indicates an enlargement of the thyroid gland. It usually results in a goiter, tumors or nodules developing within the thyroid gland.
  • Changes in the heart rate: Heart, one of the most vital organs of the body, is also affected by the hormones produced in the thyroid gland. Hyperthyroidism (elevated levels of thyroid hormone) can cause the heart to beat fast, while hypothyroidism (too low levels of thyroid hormones) slows down the heartbeat. Increase in the level of thyroid hormones also increases the blood pressure and causes a pounding sensation in the heart.
  • Mood swings: Mental functioning is affected in both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. The disorders related to thyroid gland have a major impact on emotions, energy, and the mood of a person. Symptoms like depression, tiredness, fatigue and drowsiness are often associated with hypothyroidism. On the other hand, hyperthyroidism leads to sleep disorders, stress, anxiety, and restlessness.
  • Hair Loss: Hair loss happens to one of the most common symptoms of thyroid. Extreme high or low levels of thyroid hormones can lead to hair loss. However, the hair grows back to normal, once the condition is treated.
  • Heat intolerance: Thyroid has a major impact on the regulation of body temperature. People with an overactive thyroid gland tend to experience intolerance to higher temperatures.

  • Menstrual changes: Changes or an abnormality in the menstrual cycle is yet another common symptoms of thyroid. Hypothyroidism often leads to excessive or prolonged menstrual bleeding, while hyperthyroidism results in reduced menstrual flow.
  • High cholesterol levels: People having hypothyroidism tend to have high blood cholesterol levels.
  • Dryness in skin and brittle nails
  • Tingling and numbness sensation in the hands or fingers
  • Feeling bloated: The insufficient production of thyroid hormone leads to fluid retention which further causes the feeling of being bloated.
  • Pain in the muscles: Muscle aches and pain is one of the most common symptoms of thyroid.

Keeping in mind the severity of thyroid, it is recommended to keep a check on the symptoms of the disease and ensure a timely treatment to combat the same.
