Do’s and Don’ts of Hand Washing: Importance of hygiene

MGS Hospital - Sparkle and Shine…Wash Your Hands Every Time!

Hand hygiene is undoubtedly the most important life skill. With more than 1,500 bacteria thriving on just 1 cm of your hands, it becomes imperative to wash them at least for 20 seconds with soap and water. Doctors at MGS Hospital (Delhi) say, “Hand-washing is the easiest way of dodging infections. Clean your hands frequently and properly to prevent the spread of germs.” So, do it and SAVE LIFE! Hand hygiene can be maintained in three easy ways:
  • By washing hands with soap and water
  • By using an antiseptic hand wash
  • By rubbing an alcohol-based foam or gel sanitizer on hands
It is essential to clean your hands:
  • When the hands are visibly dirty
  • Before and while preparing food
  • Before and after eating
  • After using restroom
  • After changing an infant’s diaper
  • After touching an animal
  • While inserting or removing contact lenses
  • After blowing your nose, or coughing and sneezing in your hand
  • After handling garbage or soiled household items
  • After treating a wound
  • If you are in the immediate vicinity of a sick or injured person
The right way to wash your hands:
  • Wet your hands properly with water
  • Apply sufficient amount of soap (bar, liquid or powder) to wet hands
  • Rub your hands together thoroughly for at least 20 seconds to create lather
  • Scrub all surfaces vigorously, such fingers, fingernails, back of the hands and wrists
  • Rinse hands well with water
  • Use clean or disposable towel or an air dryer to dry your hands
  • Turn the faucet off using a towel or your elbow
Maintain hand skin health by:
  • Avoiding use of hot water for washing hands as it will make the skin dry
  • Properly cleaning the skin beneath long fingernails or artificial nail extensions
  • Keeping the natural nail tips short (not more than ¼ inch)
  • Cleaning the skin underneath rings
  • Using dermatologically-approved hand lotions and creams
